So my mum chanced upon this MLM company called "Summit International Lily Singapore" and bought a heating mattress (thin ass mat in my opinion) for SGD 5.7K and 3 pieces of shapewear (literal taobao stuff) for 2k. They apparently sweet talk my naive ass mum into buying those items, saying that the mattress will heal all sorts of illnesses and the shapewear will slim them down without working out like wtf is this bullshit HAHA like i rather she use the money for 4D/Toto or even the casinos. I’ve tried my best to convince her not to buy the items as they are SCAMS!! i even showed her proofs and those reviews posted but she still went ahead with her purchases...she even said oh those reviews posted are fake...and that she will check with the sales rep?!! like omg...she’s only in her 50s😭😭😭...why is she js so naive and falling for these scams...even my grandma has way more common sense than her.

I know two friends who graduated in CS from NUS. They rejected a few offers because the pay was below $5k and the jobs didn’t come with the usual big tech perks like remote work or fancy pantry snacks... reasons that seemed pretty trivial. Yet, they keep complaining that the job market is very bad. Now they're saying they rather remain jobless than take up traineeships which to them, is an insult to the prestige of CS. To me, it looks more like they’re being picky rather than the market being tough. So is the job market really that bad, especially for fresh graduates?

Today, I need to get something off my chest. Most of you will never become good wealth builders. Not because you don’t research enough. Not because the system is “rigged.” Not because you didn’t buy VWRA, CSPX, or VOO. Most will fail for three main reasons: 1. You miss the forest for the trees There are endless debates about which platform or fund is cheapest. Yes, paying 1.5–3.5% annually on ILPs or active unit trusts is a real issue. But obsessing over a 0.05% vs. 0.3% fee difference? It’s not wrong to care about efficiency, but our energy is finite. Many people spend so much time and energy nitpicking fees while bleeding hundreds or thousands elsewhere, whether through overpriced insurance plans or lifestyle creep. Congratulations, you bought the “perfect” instrument. But if your savings rate is weak, the single biggest driver of wealth, you’re still stuck. It’s like spending weeks choosing between Nike and Adidas, then only running once a month. 2. Mental accounting bias Too many investors are dishonest about their returns. If one-third of your money sits in cash “waiting for a dip,” another third is in speculative assets, and only the last third is in a proper diversified portfolio, you are likely not making 8-10% annually. You cherry-pick the best-performing slice, ignore the satellite portfolio when it tanks, and bury your losses deep in your subconscious. From the posts I see, I can deduce that most people’s real returns across your investible don’t even beat CPF SA or endowment plans once those hidden losses and opportunity costs are accounted for. 3. Your asset allocation doesn’t match your risk appetite Uncertainty is part of the game, that’s why equities outperform bonds and cash in the long run. Volatility is the price of admission. But many here can’t handle it, so they try to time the market, fail, and quietly vanish. The truth is, too many of you are 100% in equities when you shouldn’t be. A mix of stocks and bonds is sensible for most people, yet all I ever see here is: “VWRA VWRA VWRA.” Give me a break. In case it's not obvious enough, adding bonds as an allocation (90/10, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40) and rebalancing back to the intend allocation peridocially or even owning an indexed allocation fund or Robo if you're lazy, would go a long way. You would reduce your EXPECTED returns, but if that pushes you over the line to commit more into the markets, not market time, or not to sell during bear markets, it will go a long way in terms of what returns you actually REALISE. The multi-year bear markets will eventually come. We just don't know when. Be honest about your risk tolerance, especially now, in a bull market. Finding out your true risk profile in a bear market has terrible consequences. === At the end of the day, studies after studies show that the average investor is terrible. And joining this sub doesn’t make you an exception.
Recently talking to a few friends. I had some work and financial issues when younger and put off dating in my late 20s and early 30s. I endured a very bad break up with a girl at 33 who hurt me badly. Then Covid came and things got worst from there. I recently have been talking to a few different people since and have been surprised at the backlash I received from saying I have a desire to be a father..........many thinks I am irresponsible at wanting to be a father at my age. For what it's worth, the backlash that I am receiving is coming from locals and local ladies. I feel like the local scene is more harsh towards older men who wants to be father. Now financially stable. Have my own 5-room HDB flat, renting out the spare bedrooms and earning income. Is anyone else experiencing the same?

When I was younger I was so pissed off w my parents snooping into my room and my privacy so I did a life pro tip. Basically I purposely left my door unlocked and went bare and starting rubbing one out and I timed it so that my mom will walk in on me. She did walk in on me. Then I made sure when relatives and her friends are around to casually tell them that my mom walked in on me. The trick is to make sure she’s more embarrassed than I am. Idc at all becos she’ll be more embarrassed to her friends than me. Lol, never again she barged into my room without knocking.

Understand that it varies for everyone and depending on where you work. But just curious generally how much do people spend on lunch on normal work day (esp in CBD). I used to work in non CBD area for almost 10 years and can easily have decent meal below 5 dollars, maybe with drink at most 7-8 dollars (we do spend more if there is occassion but not often + mostly bosses will pay for it). Recently moved to company in CBD, and noticed that the people here spend like 15-20 ish bucks for meal almost daily. There are not a lot of alternative for cheap meal but I am still trying to keep my lunch at 5-10 dollars. So end up always try to avoid team lunch. Not sure if I am the one being stingy, but I can’t get the idea of spending so much for a quick weekday lunch with colleagues. Wouldn’t mind spending 3-4 times that budget for proper meal with my partners and friends definitely. So just curious am i the abnormal one, should i adjust my budget so I can socialize more? I meant idm scrolling phone, reading reddit during lunch (honestly i feel more rested this way than trying to socialize with people i am not close with tho they are nice people generally), but just worry that i would be deem as antisocial and affect my career progression overall.

Lots of post pandemic Singaporeans, including myself ask this question. It seems like it's more common here than in other Asian cities. But why do we always see this? I asked a similar question about two years ago and based on my own observations. Here is what I think: 1. Many of these are middle-aged to wlderly people. They used to mainly read newspapers prior to the pandemic. The pandemic led to the rise of Social Media usage and TikTok outside of the younger generations, as I have observed with my own family, leading to increased phone usage outside. Since many are...newer to using their phones outside, and not using your phone loudly is more-or-less an unwritten rule (until just a couple of months ago), many might not know. And the fact that these new written rules are merely advisories pasted on the walls means that it would be ignored 2. Older people are also not used to headphones, and headphones nowadays are more difficult to set up for the less tech literate, especially as Bluetooth is more popular and headphone jacks are gone. Also, contrary to what some might instinctively think, it's not because of age-related hearing loss. 3. Why Singapore specifically? Singaporeans are generally non-confrontational in public and are scared of directly addressing the matter (kiasi). It's our nature, IDK why specifically, probably due to our heavy surveillance or internet vigilantes (STOMP in the past, TikTok today) but even I feel that way. I don't feel comfortable asking someone to reduce their volume as I fear they would resist and argue with me. This leads to a Bystander effect where we feel someone else would address the issue. In Hong Kong or even KL, you are more likely to get confronted for stuff like this. For example, i stood on the left of the escalator in HK by mistake (they stand on the other side) and someone tapped my shoulder asking me to shift. In SG, people would merely stand behind the person standing on the wrong side, rarely asking them to shift.

Is this really necessary? 53yo in Singapore for 30 years means more than half her life in Singapore. On paper illegal yes, but do we really have to publish her face out like this on top of a 13k fine. Just kinda feel bad for her trying to make an honest living.

I'll go first. When I used to work in a bank call centre, a credit line product was targeted more towards customers who had a history of paying credit card bills late but would ultimately pay their bills. I guess the intent was to collect more interest from such customers as they would have a higher likelihood of tardy payments.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but Singapore doesn’t feel like home anymore. Back then, I felt a sense of belonging. But now… I feel completely disconnected. Everywhere is so crowded, the weather feels unbearable, and I can’t shake the resentment that so many people here aren’t even Singaporeans. A lot are just using Singapore as a stepping stone to make money, and it feels like we’ve lost something in the process. The trains are packed, the cost of living has gone up, and honestly, it feels like locals are the ones paying the price. Jobs don’t pay well, the grind is endless, and even the fun/art scenes are slowly dying because they’re unsustainable here. (The projector) The recent National Day Rally didn’t help either. If anything, it made me feel worse. It just felt like numbers to the government, not real people living and struggling here. It makes me tired. It makes me want to leave. I feel like I’ve lost hope for this country, and it’s painful to admit because this used to be home. Am I just seeing things in a negative light?

I’m being 100% serious here, I know we all joke about how fked up the weather is. But from the bottom of my heart, I genuinely feel that I cannot enjoy my self in this country solely due to the weather. I literally can’t step outside without breaking out in sweat, drenching my clothes. I can’t enjoy nature walks, can’t run errands , can’t Exercise outside, etc… I love this country, I love the infrastructure , I love that food and transport is affordable, I love the low tax rate, among many other things. It’s easy to focus on the flaws, but Compared to all other major cities, Singapore is the closest thing you can get to a utopia. But the FUCKING WEATHER man….. it’s seriously making me question my long term plans in this country. I had a friend recently come back from a trip to the Middle East where the temperature was 45 degrees, 45 DEGREES CELCIUS, and they said SINGAPORE FELT WORSE DUE TO THE HUMIDITY 💀💀 SINGAPORE WEATHER LITERALY FEELS WORSE THAN A 45 DEGREE DESERT
