F&b shops are closing left right centre. Heritage hawker stalls cannot stand the increasing rent plus cost of living because kopitiams are being flipped like the beo crescent curry rice one. Rent is increasingly ridiculous. Everybody pocket hurting. Solutions are simple and relatively painless for us. But painful for those landlords and operators. 1. Eat hawker food in hawker centre. Especially from the older hawkers. Or cook and eat in. It's cheaper and healthier than those in food courts or kopitiams. If you must buy from them, tabao. Because the owners mostly run the drinks stall and very profitable. Make these scalping koptiam landlords suffer. Do not patronise the f&b outlets. Especially overseas ones like from China. Those are the ones increasing the rent prices because deep pockets and SG as test market for regional expansion. 2. Buy online and overseas. I think a lot are doing it already. There is actually no motivation to need to buy anything from shopping malls. Make the reits suffer. If no business they need to lower rent. Or buy from HDB mom & pop shops. 3. Be more aware. Rent is THE primary cause for the escalation of prices here. Inflation, high wages are partially an effect of that too. The govt do not want to confront it because they and their cronies are the primary beneficiary of it. TLDR: Spend your money anywhere except in shopping malls and kopitiams. In a capitalistic society like ours, the way to fight back against rent is to deprive them of revenue sources. Support hawkers in hawker centers or cook and eat in. Buy online and overseas plus local mum pop shops.

Just tried this combo of theirs and it's so much value compared to the other fast food options. Their whopper is 1.5 times larger, their nuggets are practically the same as macs and they even give free curry sauce.

Anyone knows fairly large spots serving Ramen, Sushi, Sashimi, Dons, Omu rice, and Tonkatsu?? Getting tired going to my typical spots in town, and would like hearing your suggestions!

A few days when KF Seetoh highlighted the issues with Canberra SEHC, many were making snide remarks about him being a busybody. But just yesterday, the company running that SEHC reversed the decision for the hawkers to to include budget meals. Everyone should realise that if enough people make a loud enough noise, things can change. Hawker centres serves a crucial cultural and societal need. Many lower income families and elderly depend on them for cheap, delicious food while at the same time hawker food acts as maybe the one remaining force that anchor us to this damn country. The government via NEA should continue to be the ones running hawker centres. Hawker centers should not be run by for profits companies masquerading as social enterprises profiteering from the hawkers squeezed in the middle. By having these companies bid to run hawker centres, we the citizens are the ones paying the raising cost. Already many hawkers have hung up their apron citing increasing costs and old age with no one eager to fill the gap. Additionally lower profit and labour intensive dishes like char kway teow and kway chap are disappearing fast. NEA doesn't care because it's not their job to as these companies see an opportunity to make more money from us while the hawkers are at the mercy of these companies. And we are the ones to suffer with expansive, mediocre or franchised food prepared in a central kitchen There will be the naysayers pointing at the futility of this all with the tired 65% voted for it and all that..This post isn't for you. It's easiest to be negative and complain/ critique from the sidelines. Ironically it is only the citizens that can make the difference. We need people to voice out against more SEHC in our communities and against for profit companies ruining our hawker centres. There are a few ways to do this. Don't patronise the overpriced drink stall/counter at these SEHC which are run by the companies themselves. (because they have the highest profit margins) Raise the raising cost of hawker food in your area to your MPs and that these SEHC are making things worse. If enough people raise it, they will have to discuss it in parliament. (I have already met my MP. ) Edit : if anyone can share links of the relationships of the owners of these social enterprises to either pap cadres or ministers please do. If we can get more reporting done about this, the more the spotlight will be on these owners and companies. Share and keep the discourse alive on social media. Many older hawkers are lower educated and afraid of losing their livelihood not without grounds. Spread the word and patronise good hawker food. If anyone has any other ideas, please share. What is at stake is a future without authentic hawker food but generic, mediocre franchised ones prepared in a central kitchen put together by foreign workers in food courts and million dollar kopitiams.

To whoever did the R&D for the microwavable butter chicken meal at 7/11, I want to thank you for my bottom of my heart because it is the only thing that brings me comfort on some my hardest days. Like legit this meal has never let me down before. The only time Iβm slightly disappointed with the experience is when the plastic peel off is impossible to peel off without using scissors. But thatβs a packaging design issue and not your fault. Youβre my hero and I want you to know that.

One with actually flavourful rice. I know Bismillah gets a lot of flak, especially with their association with the Michelin Guide, but their rice is actually nice. Their proteins are rubbish though and the prices are high. Most friends I know recommend Biryani places with the rice not tasty and also drenched in curry. I feel this defeats the purpose of eating a biryani.
