Not quite there yet but noticed my portfolio snowballing over the years. Using IBKR now but looking to explore other brokerage. For those investing big sum, do you invest in other instruments other than stocks?

When I was younger I was so pissed off w my parents snooping into my room and my privacy so I did a life pro tip. Basically I purposely left my door unlocked and went bare and starting rubbing one out and I timed it so that my mom will walk in on me. She did walk in on me. Then I made sure when relatives and her friends are around to casually tell them that my mom walked in on me. The trick is to make sure she’s more embarrassed than I am. Idc at all becos she’ll be more embarrassed to her friends than me. Lol, never again she barged into my room without knocking.

I’m being 100% serious here, I know we all joke about how fked up the weather is. But from the bottom of my heart, I genuinely feel that I cannot enjoy my self in this country solely due to the weather. I literally can’t step outside without breaking out in sweat, drenching my clothes. I can’t enjoy nature walks, can’t run errands , can’t Exercise outside, etc… I love this country, I love the infrastructure , I love that food and transport is affordable, I love the low tax rate, among many other things. It’s easy to focus on the flaws, but Compared to all other major cities, Singapore is the closest thing you can get to a utopia. But the FUCKING WEATHER man….. it’s seriously making me question my long term plans in this country. I had a friend recently come back from a trip to the Middle East where the temperature was 45 degrees, 45 DEGREES CELCIUS, and they said SINGAPORE FELT WORSE DUE TO THE HUMIDITY 💀💀 SINGAPORE WEATHER LITERALY FEELS WORSE THAN A 45 DEGREE DESERT

Preface: This post is discussing the inflation of prices with attractive truncated payment schemes and leverage for new launches. You can disagree that this inflated prices, sure. But it’s obvious to me that it inflates prices. That’s the reason why resale condo prices have stalled vs new launches. ———————————————————————— Looking at the Springleaf sales, im utterly convinced now the new launch market is really just driven by people with excess cash that don’t know how to invest in other asset classes It’s so easy to sell real estate in Singapore - in fact the argument has become so stupid? It’s literally just a brain dead comparison of XX psf vs XX psf in a big circle around an area. Springleaf is literally in the middle of nowhere, somewhere in the middle of Yishun and Sembawang, but got marketed as ‘cheap’ vs Lentor / Thomson. No schools nearby, few eateries, no malls and supermarkets, one mrt, and people are paying these prices. The craziest thing is the agents talking about high rental demand and high yield - I seriously cannot see who is going to rent it…? I recall similar arguments being made about Normanton park + it being a massive development. All I see are a crazy amount of units available for rent lol, probably empty, probably getting worse with new supply in the area I don’t really care that people buy it, it’s just kind of hilarious to me that this is the current situation. With leverage all you need is the down payment amount, and new launches have staggered payments too, which is really absurd. Basically the market can be inflated significantly with very limited capital. I just find it disturbing that a small group of people can distort the market so much, leading to the current situation in the housing market generally. Obviously the only winner in this situation are the banks and agents. The buyers… I hope you find the next sucker to sell to. In the end it is what it is, maybe there are endless suckers lmao If condo prices start to hit 2.8-3k psf on average even in OCR I think there are going to be way worse problems for society, especially if HDB resale prices inflate accordingly. All I can say for the younger generation is, please learn how to do simple math, invest, and hopefully you can get out of this absurd market for your own housing needs.

A few days when KF Seetoh highlighted the issues with Canberra SEHC, many were making snide remarks about him being a busybody. But just yesterday, the company running that SEHC reversed the decision for the hawkers to to include budget meals. Everyone should realise that if enough people make a loud enough noise, things can change. Hawker centres serves a crucial cultural and societal need. Many lower income families and elderly depend on them for cheap, delicious food while at the same time hawker food acts as maybe the one remaining force that anchor us to this damn country. The government via NEA should continue to be the ones running hawker centres. Hawker centers should not be run by for profits companies masquerading as social enterprises profiteering from the hawkers squeezed in the middle. By having these companies bid to run hawker centres, we the citizens are the ones paying the raising cost. Already many hawkers have hung up their apron citing increasing costs and old age with no one eager to fill the gap. Additionally lower profit and labour intensive dishes like char kway teow and kway chap are disappearing fast. NEA doesn't care because it's not their job to as these companies see an opportunity to make more money from us while the hawkers are at the mercy of these companies. And we are the ones to suffer with expansive, mediocre or franchised food prepared in a central kitchen There will be the naysayers pointing at the futility of this all with the tired 65% voted for it and all that..This post isn't for you. It's easiest to be negative and complain/ critique from the sidelines. Ironically it is only the citizens that can make the difference. We need people to voice out against more SEHC in our communities and against for profit companies ruining our hawker centres. There are a few ways to do this. Don't patronise the overpriced drink stall/counter at these SEHC which are run by the companies themselves. (because they have the highest profit margins) Raise the raising cost of hawker food in your area to your MPs and that these SEHC are making things worse. If enough people raise it, they will have to discuss it in parliament. (I have already met my MP. ) Edit : if anyone can share links of the relationships of the owners of these social enterprises to either pap cadres or ministers please do. If we can get more reporting done about this, the more the spotlight will be on these owners and companies. Share and keep the discourse alive on social media. Many older hawkers are lower educated and afraid of losing their livelihood not without grounds. Spread the word and patronise good hawker food. If anyone has any other ideas, please share. What is at stake is a future without authentic hawker food but generic, mediocre franchised ones prepared in a central kitchen put together by foreign workers in food courts and million dollar kopitiams.

While picking up my kids from primary school, I witness an argument between a lady (20+) and an uncle (70+). The uncle was smoking near a grey bin, outside of the school compound. The lady told the uncle not to smoke citing a sign on the school fence that smoking is not allowed within 5m of school compound. Uncle retorted aggressively that the lady should mind her own business, he is smoking outside the school and is under the not sheltered area. Lady insisted that it is within 5m of school compound. Uncle was agitated, aggressive and dared the lady to call the police. There were quite a few bystanders, mostly waiting to pick up their kids. Noone intervened, not sure if it escalated after I left. My kids asked me what was the commotion about which prompted me to think about my own inactions. I feel guilty for not stepping up for the lady. I didn't have a ruler and not too good at estimating either. Uncle could be beyond the 5m of school compound, which means smoking there is not wrong. Lady maybe had good intentions since many students will be coming out to the area. Asking for opinions on what will you all do in this situation, especially since uncle gave the entitled, offensive, wanna fight kinda vibes.

Frustrated with new citizens purchasing HDBs when they have no intention of living in SG I recently found out that my Malaysian colleague is trying for BTO. The couple are Malaysians — the male partner recently converted to Singaporean (accepted prior to recent election), and the female remains a PR — are applying for a BTO flat. What frustrates me is that they have openly said they don’t plan to live in Singapore long-term. They’re only buying the flat for “investment” or as a backup plan. The male didn’t serve National Service because he became a citizen as an adult. Yet, by simply converting, he now has access to heavily subsidised public housing — and the PR partner gets to ride on that privilege too. To me, this exposes a serious flaw in the current policy. BTO flats are meant to help Singaporean families build stable homes. But cases like this suggest that even new citizens with shallow roots — and zero NS contribution — can access the same BTO supply and subsidies as lifelong Singaporeans. Key Policy Gaps: 1. No minimum citizenship duration before a new SC can apply for BTO with a PR spouse. 2. No requirement for NS (or equivalent national contribution) from adult male new citizens. 3. No check on intent to stay — buyers can qualify for BTO even if they clearly view it as an investment vehicle. Meanwhile, many Singaporeans — who’ve served NS, paid taxes all their lives, and genuinely plan to raise families here — are still waiting years for a BTO or are priced out of the resale market. I’m not against immigration or new citizens — but access to subsidised public housing should reflect commitment, sacrifice, and intent to settle, not just a passport conversion. There’s a growing sense that some are exploiting the system while true-blue citizens are left behind. What are your thoughts on new citizen purchasing HDBs?
