Frustrated with new citizens purchasing HDBs when they have no intention of living in SG I recently found out that my Malaysian colleague is trying for BTO. The couple are Malaysians — the male partner recently converted to Singaporean (accepted prior to recent election), and the female remains a PR — are applying for a BTO flat. What frustrates me is that they have openly said they don’t plan to live in Singapore long-term. They’re only buying the flat for “investment” or as a backup plan. The male didn’t serve National Service because he became a citizen as an adult. Yet, by simply converting, he now has access to heavily subsidised public housing — and the PR partner gets to ride on that privilege too. To me, this exposes a serious flaw in the current policy. BTO flats are meant to help Singaporean families build stable homes. But cases like this suggest that even new citizens with shallow roots — and zero NS contribution — can access the same BTO supply and subsidies as lifelong Singaporeans. Key Policy Gaps: 1. No minimum citizenship duration before a new SC can apply for BTO with a PR spouse. 2. No requirement for NS (or equivalent national contribution) from adult male new citizens. 3. No check on intent to stay — buyers can qualify for BTO even if they clearly view it as an investment vehicle. Meanwhile, many Singaporeans — who’ve served NS, paid taxes all their lives, and genuinely plan to raise families here — are still waiting years for a BTO or are priced out of the resale market. I’m not against immigration or new citizens — but access to subsidised public housing should reflect commitment, sacrifice, and intent to settle, not just a passport conversion. There’s a growing sense that some are exploiting the system while true-blue citizens are left behind. What are your thoughts on new citizen purchasing HDBs?

HEAR ME OUT. i am a singaporean by the way. born and raised but just saying. singaporeans ARE SO FREAKING RUDE AND DISCOURAGING i swear…… i can name you MANY instances where singaporeans are such mood killers and i swear people in other countries will hate some of this people. and ive been to a few countries and they are super different. for example, idk why dancing on the grad stage is SUCH A CRIME. like bro they ain’t even doing anyth wrong. i saw so much freaking hate everywhere. do this in USA or smth, people will just laugh bro. the tiktok culture omg……… terrible. everything is a mistake. according to people here, you CANT HAVE FUN. there was this influencer telling her gpa on tiktok and people like “oh can’t go ntu nus”. when she did state she doesn’t really care and all. and alsooo, when people show their achievements “show off”, “wan get attention ah”. on the other hand, if people not doing so well post “so dumb sia” AND ALL THAT. WHY? idk why people are so nosy and so like boring. BORING. i love having good grades but why are people so toxic???????? and education is important and YES. but damn, what kind of culture is this? this is why people plan to move out and the mental healths of youths are terrible looking down at everything not considered the BEST) ite, poly, lower tier jcs, lower tier unis THE LIST GOES ON AND ON AND ON😵💫 MENTAL HEALTH? OH YEAH means you’re weak. tf bruh. and the older generation, “strawberry generation”, just handle it lah. NONSENSE EH. my teacher says mental health was bullshit and she prefers the olden days where they didn’t really care about it. BRUH I WISH I CAN LEAVE YOU THERE ALSO. 😔 i feel like people in sg are all way too idk what word to describe it as. seldom to people encourage, they just spread hate and stigma. lol, like they isn’t alr

Hello, am here to seek some opinions. For context im 32M looking to get some dividends income to better diversify my portfolio. I have in general settled my high risk investments (or at least am happy with current investment amts) And am looking for a more stable fixed income / dividends / low risk investments. The goal here is whether i am able to earn on avg $500 in dividends. Plan is to start accumulating over time (dca) singapore stocks that pays dividends. And for the first year re-invest my dividends earnings. 1. which platform do u recommend? 2. is there any flaw in this plan? 3. do u recommend funds over purchasing the stocks by itself? E.g UOBAM vs UOB stocks itself 4. any current stocks u recommend and is now a good time to buy in? (Just trying to time the market a little so outlook is better, also why i’m looking to dca)
