"The Year 4 student said his professor had initially deducted 10 marks from his assignment after accepting his account that he had used AI tools to locate information, not to generate content. However, he said that NTU’s School Academic Integrity Officer overruled the decision and issued a zero grade without a hearing, which gave him a formal misconduct record. The student said he appealed that decision without success." This sounds like a gross and flagrant breach of natural justice / right to a fair hearing? I really hope the student pursues a judicial review or some other kind of legal action.
Punished for being honest. And from my experience very inconsistent ruling. Profs always encourage you to declare any usage of gen ai in your reports, because its next to impossible to objectively prove usage of gen ai on the prof's part. Usually its a mark penalty but unheard of to get a 0 and a misconduct record if you declare. Even rarer that the IO overrules the prof like this too. No idea why the IO was even involved if the student declared. Sounds like someone trying to hit KPI.
NTU is being stupid here, the other universities are known to incorporate Gen AI tools in their learning and material, with the caveat that using AI-generated work wholesale amounts to plagiarism. instead, NTU is like that boomer who thinks any tool using GenAI is wrong. shameful. better not send your kids to NTU cause in the workforce, use of these tools to improve efficiency is widespread and encouraged.
