Now that's just pure stupidity, and he's also very lucky that he isn't dead. If he was struck by a larger round, or if he was hit elsewhere, someone is gonna be the first serviceman with a kill count in decades. The exercise's safety report is gonna be a crazy read.
But isn't the whole point of the butt to stop bullets that miss their target? Unless it's a very suay miss that hit the ground, ricochet over the butt, and hit the cyclist with enough momentum to injure him.
I suspect it was a larger round, 500m isn't 5.56 range and the 2.3km is very out of range for rifles. It might have been a spent GPMG round, which means he is insanely lucky because being hit by one of those at full power is no joke.
Could be sniper rifle, they do 500m there, also 7.62. Probably one of the rounds that deflected upwards from incline at the back of the range behind the targets
Very likely on the deflection or it would not have travelled 2km. As for what weapon, we'll have to wait on more info, can't really tell what weapon based only on caliber.
Don't know whether to say he unlucky or he deserves it for not obeying the big red signages.

hope so. else ppl will learn that FA in such areas wont lead to penalties. Warnings are only as effective as the last time its enforced.
