Those who have actually written a paper or anything that requires proper citations would know its near impossible to typo false citations lol. Somemore not 1 or 2 but 14, its quite a telltale sign of gen ai. But here i think the panel is upholding of the 0 grade based off the detected improper citations, which by itself is pretty egregious. So if this article is not obfuscating any details or anything (its the straits times after all lol), the decision does seem justified.
I was thinking the same when I first came across the case weeks ago. And why would anyone not using Endnote/Zotero/Mendeley when it comes to reference management?
False citations or data which aren’t just typos including citing non-existent sources… that defo looks suspicious. I mean, those of us who have written research papers will know how hard it is to actually submit a false citation vs submitting a citation filled with typo errors...
Yeah, false citations would be a smoking gun. Let's be real, anyone who did a long thesis in university definitely padded their citations with shit they never read or only skimmed through. But at the very least, we made sure to cite it properly, or at least have the thing saved somewhere. If the student couldn't provide that to the panel, they're screwed.
