This article seems to omit the trend that, of those who have secured roles, these roles tend to be contact based (typically 6 months or 1 year) rather than permanent jobs. Even government related agencies are doing this. Young people no longer feel secure enough to cope with living costs, and the prospect of their job ‘expiring’ in a few months’ time adds to the already immense stress. If you were a 25 year old woman working a contract job, would you feel secure enough financially to apply for a BTO and have kids, with so much uncertainty? (not to even mention that your BTO arrives in 5 to 8 years’ time and that you will be 30 to 33 years old when you receive keys to your flat)
Want to weigh in on gov side as well. I'm in a gov stat board which is medium sized. Had a massive hiring exercise when I came in 2021. All on contract 1 or 2 year. Kept renewing the contracts dangling the carrot of emplacement. Then after 4 years, ~50% were told no headcount to emplace, reach max contract renewal time, so they got to go. The WORST PART? We are welcoming new hires just as the 50% are being told to leave, and being put in the exact same team to replace the people who left. They are just cycling through young and cheaper blood. If even government not hiring and playing around with renewable contracts (and you cant promote on contract), why would private do any differently?
On one hand, the government is "working to improve" the situation. But on the other hand, they are the ones who also jump on the bandwagon of giving new hires zero job security, everything contract, no long term benefits, etc. When the government leads by example doing these things, how will the situation ever improve lol. Sama sama for property ma, if even HDB open mouth start at $800k, how they expect property prices to "stay affordable" lol At the end of the day, watch what they do, not what they say. Talk is cheap, I also can talk lol.
