They are so many things you can do, but can't buy flat
People lie flat not because they are lazy, but because they don't see hope even if they work hard
And their salary get stuck at low level even after putting in all the long hours, because of companies expecting one headcount to cover 3 job scopes on a salary of 1 person. Thus this 'work hard play hard' or 'work hard and success will follow' thing is becoming less and less guaranteed these days. Let's be real, these days - you work hard, instead of getting good pay, you only get MORE work being taichi to you while your salary increases by crumbs. This is the modern 21st century corporate life. Today, companies are cutting headcount costs to the bone - so its normal these days to employ one person to cover multiple scopes. Clearly SOME people don't even know about the reality these days, thinking 'oh lie flat cause this person lazy, or no ambition, typical Gen Z/millennial'. Nope. I mean, that's the kind of thinking expected of people who earn million dollar salaries like this ivory tower boomer up there. Lying flat in such an environment is logical and will even come off as common sense, just putting in effort for what you're paid for. No more, no less. Example: Did a job - HR Ops - that covered few roles packed into one. Sucked my soul out and got burnout within one year. Towards the end, sudden surge in projects directed by management - I even worked till 2 or 3am often, juggling operations in the day and projects at night. I realized shit was real when I woke up with heart palpitations even on weekends, or attending family milestones but falling asleep halfway because of the fatigue. When the boss came to offer a pay raise when I already declared my intention to move on (yeah nice timing, too little too late), it was no longer worth the detriment to mental health and wellness. Managers thinking a pay raise will make people stay even after all the mental strain and massive workload, doesn't address the underlying problem. No wonder the demand for mental health services are increasing these days. (Source, google ai bot) With this definition, I think lying flat is perfectly fine for individuals who chose this manner of lifestyle. If someone forfeit material desires to have a less stressful life, why not? Maybe the realistic question is what is the expected for a family with such lifestyle ？ - a 3room flat for in less popular neighbourhood? - public transport or moto instead of private car - wholesome self cooked food instead of restaurant - lesser promotion opportunities - a nearby vacation every few years
